Using disc media for Update Playstation 3 Firmware

Required items

  • PLAYSTATION®3 system
  • A game disc that contains update data

Update procedure



Select [Yes], and then press the X button to start the update.
If a screen prompting you to update is displayed when you start a game, you must perform a system software update to start the game. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.

  • Do not turn off the PS3™ system during an update. If an update is cancelled before completion, the system software may become damaged, and the system may require servicing or exchange.
  • The power button on the PS3™ system front is not active during an update.

Using a PC for Update Playstation 3 Firmware

Required items

  • PLAYSTATION®3 system
  • A PC with Internet access
  • Storage media (Memory Stick™, SD Memory Card, CompactFlash®) or a USB Mass Storage device such as a USB flash drive
    (At least 140 MB of free space required)

Update data download procedure

1. Create a folder on the storage media in which to save the update data.


Using a PC, create a folder named "PS3" on the storage media or USB device. Within the PS3 folder, create a folder named "UPDATE".

2. Download the update data and save it in the UPDATE folder created in step.

Be sure to save the update data as noted below. If the data is not saved in the correct way, the PS3™ system will not recognize the update data. Folder names must be in all uppercase letters.

  • Location: Save in the "PS3" folder > "UPDATE" folder
  • File name: Save as file name "PS3Updat.PUP".

Update procedure

1. Insert the storage media or USB device. that contains the update data in the PS3™ system.



2. From the home menu, select (Settings) > (System Update), and then press the X button.



3. Select [Update via Storage Media], and then press the X button.
The system automatically searches for and finds the update data saved on the storage media or USB device.



4. Start the update data.
Press the X button to start the update data. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.
You can delete the update data from the storage media or USB device after the update has been successfully completed.

  • Do not turn off the PS3™ system or remove storage media or USB device during an update. If an update is cancelled before completion, the system software may become damaged, and the system may require servicing or exchange.
  • The power button on the PS3™ system front is not active during an update.

The system automatically searches for and finds the latest version of the update data.




3. Download the update data.
If a new version of the system software is found, an update is necessary. Press the X button to start downloading the update data. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform the update.

  • Do not turn off the PS3™ system during an update. If an update is cancelled before completion, the system software may become damaged, and the system may require servicing or exchange
  • The power button on the PS3™ system front is not active during an update.

This update is for customers who own PS3™ systems sold in SCE Asia area, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thai, Singapore, Malaysia. DO NOT update your PS3™ system through this Web site if you own a system purchased in a region other than SCE Asia area, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thai, Singapore, Malaysia. There is no guarantee of proper operation with other models of the PS3™ system.

You can update the PS3™ system software by any of the following methods.

1. Update using the PS3™ system's System Update feature.

2. Download update data using a PC and save on storage media or a USB Mass Storage device. Copy the update data to the PS3™ system's hard disk and perform the update.
3. Update using update data that is included on a game disc.

An update to the PS3 system software was released on April 2, 2009. If you update your PS3 system, the system software version will be 2.70 and the following features will be updated. In order to download PS3 system software version 2.70, you will need a minimum 140Mb of free space on either the PS3 Hard Disk Drive (System Update) or on removable storage media (PC Update).

Text chat
You can now do text chat with people on your Friends list. You can also participate in text chat during gameplay with people who are playing the same game as you, or a different game.

Settings

[Dynamic Normalizer] has been added as an option under [Music Settings].
Game

You can now easily search the Internet for information about your PLAYSTATION®3 format software, as well as for games you purchased from PlayStation®Store. Select the icon for the game, and then select [Internet Search] from the options menu to get search results based on the game title.
Network

You can now copy and paste text from a Web page viewed in the Internet browser.
[Copy Address of This Page] and [Copy Address of This Link] have been added as options under [File] in the browse mode menu of the Internet browser.
[Browser Security] has been added as an option to the browse mode menu of the Internet browser. The websites for the Web filtering services that used to be listed under [Bookmarks] have been moved under this new option.
Friends

The order in which Friends are listed in the Friends list has been changed. When you have pending requests to add Users as Friends, the icons for these Users are now displayed at the top of the Friends list.
The maximum size for files that can be attached to messages has been increased to 3MB.
Other

Polish, Greek, Czech, Slovak, and Turkish can now be displayed in the Internet browser.
Note:

This system software update includes all features contained in previous versions.
The new system software will preserve any settings previously made to the PLAYSTATION 3.
Depending on the software title, you may not be able to play without first updating the PS3 system software.
Do not perform updates using any data other than the official update data provided by Sony Computer Entertainment over a network or on disc media, and do not perform updates by methods other than those described in the product documentation or in this site. If an update is performed using data from another source, by another method, or with a PS3 system that has been altered or modified in any way, the PS3 system may not operate properly and may not be able to install the official update data. Any of these actions may void the PS3 system warranty and affect your ability to obtain warranty services and repair services from Sony Computer Entertainment.
